Clerk/Typist 1958-1961. I worked in an all-male office at the end of the Herald Assembly Track. On my first day, I had to wash the cups and mugs and had to walk the entire length of the track to the Ladies washroom. As I stepped out of the office, all the men started banging spanners, hammers and everything else they could find, very loudly and of course, many ‘wolf whistles’. I had to brave that for about 3 days and then they stopped making so much noise and actually started talking to me. Worked with Bill McCombie and Mr MacDonald (Mac) from Birmingham. Whilst there, I got married and received an Electric Toaster as a wedding present. One memorable day was when I had just moved from my desk and a set of fork lift truck forks, came crashing through the windows just behind my desk – what a fright! I did however, during my time there, learn my first rule of engineering – If it doesn’t fit, hit it with a hammer!

My dad worked there after the war . He was originally an electro plater . When that process was abandoned , he was put in the paint shop but had the most awful allergic reaction to the paint . I remember him coming home with is face and hands red swollen and blistered ! As a result the only job available was in the stores . Of course the pay for a store man was considerably lower so my dad went on permanent night shift to ensure a reasonable income . His name was Charles ( Paddy) Simpson . My late sister ( Wendy Simpson) worked in the offices when she left school in 1957 .

I did work at the Standard/Triumph from around 59 to 64. I worked on the electrical panel that dropped the shells onto the track, much like a giant car park above the track. We could select any shell from the floor above, drop it on the track, the typist would then type out the sequence of the models, distribute them to various departments, which then placed the right gearbox engine or whatever to meet that particular shell. If the typist made a mistake and omitted the 'o' for overdrive or visa versa, then the workman would hammer and bang the engine in the wrong car. Same with a number of things, whatever came to meet the shell, in it went, these were called foreigners and placed outside in a special part of the car park. I'm sure you understand that two Spitfires could not follow each other, because of the time allowed for the workman to fit said parts, same with disc brakes, overdrives and a whole host of things so it was quite a tricky job to place them in the right sequence.
We had all manner of people visit our little office, including the managing director of General Motors USA, Russians, Chinese, celebrities, we tried to explain the system to them all, This system was reputed to have been worked out and put in place by the electricians of the company.
Workers were offered 17½% off a new car.
Simpson, Wendy

Gearbox assy at Canley - i can remember me asking how many a day and I'm sure it was always around 230. One of his mates was Jack Allen a white haired Irishman - Dad had one of the early 948cc Heralds in 1959 in Coffee and White reg YHP 31 from Newsomes at Styvechale complete with Dunlop Gold Seal tyres and very soon somehow a Spitfire twin carb head was acquired to pep it up a bit but they werent quick.
Remember people would stand and be amazed at 25ft turning circle which virtually rolled the front tyres off the rims.
